Buildings consume 40% of our nation's energy, 73% of electricity, 38% of our coal, and 33% of our natural gas. With such a large economic and environmental footprint, cities throughout the U.S. have recognized the need and benefits of increasing building energy efficiency. By partnering with the private sector, and leveraging the expertise of local and national building industry stakeholders, cities such as New York City, Chicago, Illinois and Washington, DC, have been able to achieve significant progress in building efficiency.
